Superchild Syndrome
My parents have trained us to be achievers especially in academics. Papa always tells us stories on how he was a valedictorian from elementary until he graduated high school. I guess it was always expected that me and my siblings should be at least on Top Three of the class. So we learned to study hard to please our parents. We try to stay on top of our class and join quiz bees and math Olympiads. The medals and trophies we bring home bring so much joy and pride to our parents. They even made a cabinet to display all our awards.
I understand them because we grew up achieving more and it built our self confidence. But sometimes it is really stressful competing with others just to gain parents’ approval. Looking back, I never got to enjoy my childhood and teen years fully because I was always stuck at home studying. Besides, success as a person is never measured based on academic performance.
So I hope I won’t do the same to my son. I’ll let him relax and learn on his own pace. I won’t force him to go to school at an early age if he isn’t ready yet. Of course we must nurture their gifts but not to the point that it’s causing them too much stress already.
Just my thoughts.
