Women Drivers

Women behind a steering wheel are often stereotyped as being inferior to men in driving skills. Do the facts uphold this generalization? Not according to a journal published by the Automobile Association of South Africa. Of all road accidents in that country in one recent year, over 83 percent involved male drivers. Many insurance companies thus offer women drivers better rates than men. Their auto insurance quote are therefore much lower than men drivers. “This confidence in women’s driving skills,” exists because the industry “believes that women are less aggressive behind the wheel, less inclined to take risks and less likely to be involved in traffic offences.” The magazine concludes that the right attitude, irrespective of a driver’s sex, is what ensures good driving habits.

Most Widely Used Drug

“Caffeine is the most widely used drug in the world,” says The American Journal of Psychiatry. “Studies show that abstinence from caffeine induces a withdrawal syndrome of headache, fatigue, and drowsiness which begins within 12-24 hours and lasts about 1 week. The syndrome can be severe and appears to be one reason for continued use of coffee.” However, coffee is not the only source of caffeine. Tea, soft drinks (such as colas), and many over-the-counter drugs (weight loss supplements, diuretics, stimulants, pain relievers, cold and allergy remedies) also contain substantial amounts of caffeine. As a result, many people who feel they have eliminated caffeine from their diets may still experience withdrawal symptoms under certain circumstances, for example when they are hospitalized.

Blown fuse - What to do?

The most common type of blackout is when a fuse is blown or an electric circuit breaker is tripped in a private home.
Where circuit breakers are used, it is merely a matter of resetting the breaker that has been tripped. As for a blown fuse, it, too, can easily be spotted, because its window is darker or clouded.
Extra fuses should always be on hand, care should be exercised when using fuse holders and also to have fuses with the right rating; As a precaution, turn off the appliance that caused the fuse to blow or cut down the load before replacing the fuse in order to avoid trouble. For safety’s sake, use only one hand in replacing fuses, and if the floor is damp, make it a point to stand on a dry board.
If your fuses blow out repeatedly, you may be able to solve the problem by using more outlets and thus distribute your appliances over more circuits.

Backtracking : Oct Anniv

I’ve been too preoccupied with work lately that I have found the time to blog personal stuff. I was organizing some photos today and I realized that I haven’t written a post about our October Anniversary celebration. You see, 10.23 was the date when M0rn1ng and I started our lovely relationship. We still remember it even in simple ways as it is the start of something as beautiful as our marriage and eventually our family.

So for this year, I took a leave from work and we watched a basketball game. Ginebra won so M0rn1ng was ecstatic. We saw a movie after. Movie is free, courtesy of Citibank.

We ended the day with a sumptuous dinner at Racks. :) Here are some snaps while we’re goofing around.

Resumé Fraud

While job applicants generally want to present themselves to potential employers in the best possible light, some resort to outright fraud. A study by the employment screening company Australian Background found that of 1,000 job seekers, 21 percent had lied to prospective employers about their qualifications, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.  Additionally, “60 per cent of those with criminal convictions failed to admit them, even when asked,” states the paper. “Most applicants during pre-employment screening may claim that they ruled the world,” says employment executive Gary Brack. “But when you probe a bit further into their last job, it may turn out that they only ruled a little corner of the office.”

From Bread to Dough

Bread dough is a claylike substance that can be used to create all manner of household decorations. The dough can be prepared in two different ways. In one method, flour, salt, and water are mixed and then baked in an oven, producing Baker’s Clay. The other method is a no-bake variety that uses bread and glue as its ingredients. Since both kinds of dough look and smell good, your children may be tempted to taste them. But please remember to instruct your children: DO NOT EAT THE DOUGH!

Here are some Helpful Hints on how you can make your bread to dough:
• Use bread one to three days old.
• Before kneading, work some hand lotion into your hands to help keep the dough from sticking.
• Refrigerated and stored in a plastic bag inside a plastic container, bread dough will keep for weeks. Put any unused portions of dough in a plastic bag to keep it moist and pliable.
• If the dough tends to dry out while you are working with it, knead in a few drops of water or white glue.
• Add dough onto dough by gluing. Or crosshatch the area where the pieces will meet, brush with water, and then stick them together.
• A garlic press will break if you overload it, so teach the children how to use it properly.
• If you paint your piece after it has been made, be very sure that the paint is dry before attempting to seal it.
• Do not place bread-dough articles in very humid areas such as the bathroom or over the kitchen sink. Clean each piece by wiping it off with a slightly damp cloth.

Is 4-wheel drive safer?

Many believe that it is always safer to drive a four-wheel-drive vehicle, especially in snow and ice. However, “when it comes to stopping, four-wheel-drive vehicles have no advantage over two-wheel-drive vehicles,” reports The Wall Street Journal. According to insurance marketing officials, some of the most popular models actually have “worse than average injury and collision insurance claims.” Evidently, many drivers become overconfident and take unnecessary risks when driving vehicles with four-wheel drive. A researcher at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, noted that “through movies and TV, people have come to associate four-wheel drives with a sense of independence and freedom.” This sense of power and invincibility can interfere with sound judgment, which is ultimately the best policy for safe driving.
