Heavy Problem

Fatness is a result of “gluttony, not thyroids,” claims an endocrinologist in Mexico City. Although fat can also be hyperplastic (greater amount of adipose tissue) or prepubertal (before puberty), he says that studies reveal that fat is not caused by disorders in the thyroids but by “the lack of will to eat less” and “can start from the earliest years in life when a mother excessively feeds her child.” Since obesity is linked with disorders causing heart disease, the doctor points to a proper diet and exercise as the solution. At the same time, he warns the gorditos (chubbies) to beware of poisoning because of abuse of weight loss pills.

Earlier Wrinkles

Everyone gets wrinkles eventually. Hundreds of thousands of women read wrinkle cream reviews everyday online. They want to get rid of those ugly lines on their face and look more beautiful. But what are the causes of premature wrinkling? The ultraviolet radiation in sunlight, sedentary living, and poor diet are some of the causes. One beauty editor identifies one cause of premature wrinkling: “Smoker’s skin wrinkles up to 10 years sooner than that of nonsmokers.” Why? According to the New York Times article, nicotine constricts blood vessels near the skin’s surface. This makes it difficult for the blood to do its job of bringing nourishment to the skin cells and carrying away wastes.

Chronic Migraine Relief

“The best way to treat chronic headache sufferers may be to wean them off their pain killers,” says The Medical Post of Canada. he report added: “Excessive use of analgesics, such as ASA and acetaminophen, may perpetuate and intensify head pain in chronic headache patients and may interfere with otherwise effective pharmacologic therapy.” The two studies showed that, using other migraine treatment, from 75 to 82 percent of the patients showed “a significant reduction in headache frequency and intensity after three months without analgesics” and suffered few withdrawal difficulties. For the “pure migraine sufferer,” painkiller “weaning is positive,” the report concluded.

Moderate Exercise Recommended

“Moderate amounts of exercise, such as walking 12 miles [20 km] per week, may help prevent weight gain and can promote weight loss in non-dieting individuals,” reports FDA Consumer. An eight-month study involving “182 sedentary overweight men and women, ages 40-65 years,” confirmed “that there was a clear relationship between the amount of physical activity and amount of weight loss.” The participants were divided into four groups and maintained their regular diets. Three of the groups engaged in varying amounts of exercise. The fourth, a control group, did not exercise. “The control group gained weight over the study period,” states the article. “Compared with the control group, all exercise groups significantly decreased their waist and hip circumference measurements.” The findings suggest that weight can often be managed by modest amounts of exercise, using treadmill or ellipticals for half an hour each day.

Most Widely Used Drug

“Caffeine is the most widely used drug in the world,” says The American Journal of Psychiatry. “Studies show that abstinence from caffeine induces a withdrawal syndrome of headache, fatigue, and drowsiness which begins within 12-24 hours and lasts about 1 week. The syndrome can be severe and appears to be one reason for continued use of coffee.” However, coffee is not the only source of caffeine. Tea, soft drinks (such as colas), and many over-the-counter drugs (weight loss supplements, diuretics, stimulants, pain relievers, cold and allergy remedies) also contain substantial amounts of caffeine. As a result, many people who feel they have eliminated caffeine from their diets may still experience withdrawal symptoms under certain circumstances, for example when they are hospitalized.

Smoking and Wrinkles

According to a study made by Dr. Harry W. Daniell, of Redding, California, smoking actually ages a person faster than normal. After studying 1,100 persons, he found that facial wrinkles, especially those around the eyes, were deeper among persons who smoke than among nonsmokers. He observed: “In every age group, the subjects with progressively higher wrinkle scores included progressively larger percentages of smokers. And the most heavily wrinkled class in each age group was composed entirely of smokers.” Those smokers in their forties had facial wrinkling equivalent to that of nonsmokers twenty years older. So if you don’t want to have that wrinkle treatment at age 30, throw that cigarette now.

Saving Rainwater

Households rely on different water sources that must be protected from contamination. Those using rainwater, for example, should be sure that no dirt gets washed into the storage tank along with it. Also, rain barrels should be protected from insects, rodents and other animals. A well positioned rain barrel can quickly fill with water in a short amount of time during a downpour. Persons relying on surface water, such as streams or brooks, are almost certainly drinking polluted water. It is nearly impossible to protect these from contamination by animals or runoff (rainwater running in from the surface of the ground).
